Amidst the sun-kissed landscapes of the South of France, Provence has long held a magnetic allure for those seeking a haven of beauty, culture, and tranquility.

However, for many who yearn to buy a home in this idyllic region, the prospect might seem both thrilling and overwhelming.

Our recent webinar, A Home Abroad: Buying Your Dream Home in Europe, demystifies the process and offers plenty of advice for buyers - from the current state of play in the European market to the legal and financial practicalities and the latest popular locations.

In the webinar, Nicola Christinger, Associate on our International Sales team, shares her expertise on buying a home in Southern France. After more than 15 years of living and working in Provence, she offers advice on how to navigate the journey and make your search for a home in Provence an enriching and rewarding experience.

Don't get overwhelmed: embrace the diversity of Provence

Starting your property search in Provence can be both exciting and daunting. Nicola stresses to her clients the importance of breaking down the vast region into manageable sections. Contrary to the stereotypical image, Provence offers diverse landscapes and communities to suit every taste.

From the charming villages of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Maussane in the Alpilles region to the cultural treasures of Avignon and the mountainous grandeur of Luberon, there's a perfect spot for everyone.

“The lovely part of the discovery when you get to know those clients is breaking down those different areas,” Nicola says.

"If they don’t know [the area], it's about discovering what works for them in certain villages and what's on in or around major cities. When they understand a little bit more about the villages, such as their size and infrastructure, that will drive their journey as to where they end up."

Define your wishlist – but be prepared for it to change

After finding the right location, it's essential to define your wishlist. Nicola encourages potential buyers to begin with a maximum wishlist, but you should expect it to evolve as you explore the region. Watch Nicola explain in more detail below:

The top priority for most includes proximity to a village, where the quaint charm of Provencal life can be fully savoured. Buyers typically seek a comfortable home with four or five bedrooms, offering a sense of familiarity and a place to welcome family and friends. A property that requires low maintenance and "something that's easy and ready to move into" are also highly desirable, Nicola explains.

Explore this popular hotspot in Provence

Provence has long been popular with those looking to buy a home abroad, but recently, Nicola has noticed buyers gravitating towards the outskirts of Avignon and the captivating Aix-en-Provence. The area is particularly attractive for those seeking excellent international schools.

However, Provence has something for every preference, whether it's a bustling city or serene countryside. With fantastic accessibility options, including the TGV rail service and multiple airports, exploring the entire region is a breeze.

“The transport options are good, which is another reason why people love the area,” Nicola says. “And you know, France has always been a love affair of the English. I think it's because they're familiar with it, as many of us learned it at school.”

Where to buy in Provence: Nicola's top picks

When asked where she would buy in Provence, Nicola admits it’s difficult to narrow down her choices, given the abundance of picturesque spots. However, she passionately recommends the Alpilles area for its alluring surroundings and “because it offers so much in terms of lifestyle.”

For those seeking a coastal retreat, Nicola recommends Grimaud. With its medieval charm and breathtaking nature, it offers a wonderful blend of tranquility and beauty.
